Calades, these paths or squares of standing stones (laid flat), reflect a local craft akin to mosaic work and are often adorned with stylised decorations, floral, geometric or other patterns. This is a way for the craftsman in charge of the construction to add a personal and expressive touch to his work, whilst also making good use of the variety of stones to enhance it. Stones originally gathered to extend arable land. These calades, native to the region and crafted by human hands, are now part of the architectural heritage of our beautiful villages and are still the subject of meticulous restoration in the purest tradition.
